Executive Vice President Shanna Weston has more than 20 years of progressive, action-oriented union experience, including leading efforts at SEIU Local 509 and within the Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) to ensure union membership levels prior to and after the Janus decision. Most recently, she has participated in the ground-breaking organizing team at MTA, creating campaigns and communications for locals focused on public education advocacy. In this role, Shanna created communication plans and materials for local union presidents and activists, and facilitated increased participation of rank and file members in campaigns.

Prior to her time with MTA, she worked as the Field Services Director for SEIU Local 509, leading contract negotiation teams and developing a member-led communications strategy for regular updates. She spearheaded the efforts at the local level to “Reach Every Member” as the Supreme Court’s decision impacting public sector union membership loomed.

Shanna also has worked with SEIU Local 888 in Massachusetts as the Internal Organizing Director, where she led contract negotiations, internal and external campaigns, and created conference and training programs.

Prior to her move to Massachusetts in 2003, Shanna worked at SEIU Local 500 in Maryland and Washington D.C., organizing Head Start Workers, and 1199NE in Connecticut with health care and public sector social services workers.

Shanna obtained her bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut, where she studied English and Political Science, and minored in Women’s Studies. Shanna first found a strong interest in politics through her work in internships, a sessional job, and a PAC, in the legislature and political world of Connecticut. The true calling for union work, dedication to workers’ rights and advocacy, and social justice emerged soon after.

Shanna is based in the Waltham, MA office.
